Journey's In Black: Russell Simmons

Journey's In Black: Russell Simmons
He is the master visionary whose dreams have helped to shape and push Hip-Hop, America's most compelling cultural explosion of the 20th century, into the corporate mainstream and the top of the charts. From where does Russell's vision stem? His early realization to conceptualize the fact that Hip-hop's appeal could cut across geographic, ethnic, and class boundaries and that Hip-hop would evolve from it's roots of Deejays, MC's, graffiti and break dancing in the streets of New York into a world wide phenomenon that includes fashion, politics and social manifestation. Russell created business and entertainment franchises Def Jam Records, Def Comedy Jam, Def Poetry Jam and the Phat Farm clothing. BET's Journey's in Black gives Russell the stage to share with you his opinions and philosophies on Hip-hop, fashion and business.

Hip hop rivalries - Feuds and rivalries have existed since the dawn of hip hop music, which originated in the 1970s in New York City, United States. Originally, it came to block parties, where DJs would play records and isolate the percussion breaks for the dancing masses.

Spanish hip hop - Spanish hip hop music began in the late 1980s. Break dance crews used mainly American recordings, while local rappers practised for very small underground audiences.

East Coast hip hop - Hip hop music emerged from block parties thrown by owners of loud and expensive stereo equipment, which they could share with the community or use to compete among ultra-competitive West Indian DJs who began isolating the percussion break from funk or disco songs. Block Parties were famously referenced in the song South Bronx by KRS-One with the line: Power from a street light made the place dark.
